Turtles Onshore

When a turtle hatches from its shell, it is drawn to the water allowing them to fulfill the rest of their life at sea. They are drawn to the natural light of the ocean’s horizon. In recent decades, however, these turtles began to head in the wrong direction and straight to the bright lights of the cities. Turtle lovers took on the responsibility of guiding these turtles in the right direction with ocean lights and orienting them correctly towards the water.

In the same way, in my own ISM class, I find myself guiding the ambitious students around me. With experience in the field this past year, I take on my own responsibility of sharing guidance and advice for all of their successes. That is why, over the past few months, a couple of students along with myself organized an Engineering & Architecture Meetup where professionals spoke of their careers, we discussed engineering processes and networked with students across the district. Later in the month, I presented tips and tricks for making digital portfolios to students in my ISM classes.

It is so easy to let turtles defend themselves, but in the process, they end up heading to the city. With guidance, though, they find their way into the waters and succeed for the rest of their lives as I hope the ISM students in my own classes will.
