Campus Gallery Walk

Updated: Mar 18

Imagine a gallery room full of dozens of the most ambitious, teenage workaholics dressed in suit and tie each placed in front of a culmination of every piece of knowledge they’ve learned for the past six months on a 3 by 4-foot board. That imagination became a reality this past Wednesday at our Campus Gallery Walk.

The students of the ISM program got the opportunity to share everything they’ve done within the class thus far in the year with peers and teachers. Moreover, the event allows students to reflect on their learnings as they teach passers looking to explore the different posters.

I hadn’t had the chance to recognize and acknowledge how much I’ve grown in the field of mechanical engineering throughout the year until this event and it was truly eye-opening. Some of the main discussion topics as I presented my board included what my original work looked like and how it evolved from its proposed version, takeaways from my six interviews, and topics I have researched this year. Speaking about it all allowed me to cohesively share my work in learning and immersing myself in the field and it felt rewarding to be able to share it all. At the same time, the showcase demonstrated my lack of proficiency in many other areas that I had hoped to be skilled in at the beginning of the year and made me rethink my goals for my future in ISM. Though I seemed to know quite a bit of mechanical engineering from research, I felt as though I lacked knowledge in the field itself. After careful consideration, I decided to orient myself and my learning to the following topics.

- manufacturing equipment and tools

- study for an Engineering in Training(EIT) certification

- know how to create engineering drawings

- quadrupled technical knowledge in the field

The key to these goals is focusing on research and research assessments. With that in mind, I’d like to study worthy articles for my research assessments to provide me with more knowledge in the field. After all, mechanical engineering is the broadest discipline in engineering so I must be prepared to constantly absorb information.

All that to say, though I wasn't able to showcase all my research this past Wednesday, I do hope to be more knowledgeable in the field before the next showcase later this month. Perhaps this time I can partake in that room of knowledge and truly belong. Cheers to research!
