A Mechy Maze

Updated: Sep 10, 2023

I took some time this week researching the field of mechanical engineering and it's not just nuts, bolts, and gears; it's robots, space travel, and designing stuff that changes lives. Seriously, it touches every aspect of the world from biomedical to oil mining to automotive to medical. It is amazing how diverse this field is.

As I was reading through an article from Cengage Learning, I came across the day-to-day life of a mechanical engineer and was blown away! First off, they spend plenty of time tinkering and working hands-on meaning they are usually going to be found working in laboratories and testing facilities. Second, the jobs in this field are project-based which means hours can change as to how much needs to be done within a timeframe. That part seemed a little intimidating for me but helped me understand what I’d like to get into in the future.

As the world orients towards more eco-friendly processes, engineering accomplishes the same. According to the article, engineers are looking at solutions to environmental problems. I think this is incredible considering how much waste there is in the world and more so how there are so many whole groups of people working to fight against it. I aim to have a role in that group.

The best thing I’ve learned is that you don't have to be a genius from birth. Mechanical engineering is all about learning, and it's okay not to know everything. Moreover, this area of engineering is said to be the most broad and diverse branch because of its versatility. I found all of this to be so fantastic because I’m all about learning everything and so I fell deeper in love with this engineering field of a maze that I am so ready to journey further into.
